CLEAN ENERGY FROM WATER
Mauritius faces a critical challenge – a small island economy with ambitious renewable energy targets, limited available land, and a growing electricity demand. Floating photovoltaic technology offers a transformative solution – deploying large-scale solar generation capacity on inland water bodies without consuming a single hectare of land.
Obluxe is developing two 30 MWp floating solar installations on La Nicolière and Mare aux Vacoas reservoirs delivering a combined 60 MWp of clean generation capacity that would represent one of the most significant renewable energy projects in the history of Mauritius.
Developed under the Central Electricity Board Renewable Energy Hybrid Facility framework, these projects will contribute directly to Mauritius’ target of achieving 60% renewable energy by 2035.
Floating photovoltaic systems offer unique advantages over conventional ground-mounted solar – they reduce water evaporation from reservoirs, improve panel efficiency through natural water cooling, and generate clean electricity without competing with agriculture or conservation land. For a land-scarce island like Mauritius, floating solar is not just an option – it is a strategic imperative.
PREMIUM WALKABLE SOLAR SURFACE
Reservoirs Optimisation
30 MWp Floating solar installations delivering one of the largest renewable energy projects in Mauritius history
Zero Land Use
Floating PV installations deploy on existing water surfaces - generating utility-scale clean energy without converting a single hectare of agricultural or conservation land
Reduced Water Evaporation
Floating solar panels shade reservoir surfaces significantly reducing water evaporation and helping to preserve Mauritius' precious freshwater resources
Enhanced Panel Efficiency
Natural water cooling keeps floating PV panels at optimal operating temperatures - improving energy yield by up to 10% compared to ground-mounted installations
National Energy Targets
Contributing directly to Mauritius' ambitious target of achieving 60% renewable energy generation by 2035 and positioning the island as a regional clean energy leader
CEB Framework Compliant
Both projects are developed under the Central Electricity Board Renewable Energy Hybrid Facility framework ensuring regulatory alignment and grid connection approval
~130 GWh Annual Generation
Combined annual energy generation of approximately 130 GWh enough to power tens of thousands of Mauritian homes with clean solar electricity every year
Carbon Impact
Avoiding approximately 65,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually - equivalent to taking tens of thousands of cars off Mauritius roads every single year
Investment Opportunities
Both projects represent structured investment opportunities for institutional and private investors seeking exposure to utility-scale renewable energy in a stable Indian Ocean economy
Project Investment
The floating solar projects represent a unique investment opportunity in utility-scale renewable energy infrastructure in Mauritius.
Project Structure Both projects are being developed as independent Special Purpose Vehicles under the Obluxe Energy Infrastructure framework allowing structured participation from institutional investors, development finance institutions, and sovereign wealth funds.
Development Finance Obluxe is actively engaged with the Development Bank of Mauritius green finance facility and international development finance institutions to structure competitive project financing.
Revenue Model Long-term Power Purchase Agreement with the Central Electricity Board – providing stable, predictable, inflation-linked revenue streams over a 20-25 year project life.
Carbon Credits Both projects qualify for carbon credit generation under international voluntary carbon market frameworks — providing an additional revenue stream alongside PPA income.
